During the Haitian revolution their were three major leaders that pushed and influenced this revolution. Dutty Boukman, Toussant Louverture, and Jean Jaqcues Dessanes
-Dutty Boukman was a Jamaican voodoo priest, he was a slave that had escaped. In August he sparked up a large voodoo ceremony AKA- Bais Caiman. Some swore that Boukmans sacrifices changed the weather. Slaves started the rebellion led by Boukman in the Northern part of Saint Dominique. As the word spread, more and more slaves joined in the fight. Boukman was killed in November of 1791 by French troops. There idea was to show the rest of the slaves the consequences of there actions so they cut off boukmans head and placed it on the colony's capitol of Le Cup. instead of scaring the people in the fight this only aggravated them and made the people want to fight harder for Boukmans name.
-Toussant Louverture took over the rebellion after Boukmans death and became the most powerful leader. He was already a free man so he didn't see the point in fighting back, this slowly changed which led to Toussant creating his own "army of slaves". France went to war with Spain and Great Britain then the two European countries started to take part in the Haitian rev. Spain and Great Britain wanted to claim Saint Dominique as their own, Louverture supported the Spanish and sent in troops for them to fight. His mind set changed in 1794 and switched over to France. France soon stated that slavery was no longer legal in the colonies but Toussant new that "Spain and Great Britain could not promise the same thing". Louverture was the most powerful leader in the Saint Dominique, he soon then became the "general in-chef". The French leader (Napoleon Bonaparte) started to take notice of Louvertures actions and his growing power which led to Toussants captivity by the French which then turned in to his death in France, 1803.
-Jean Jacques Desssanes was a salve in Saint Dominique and joined the revolution near the begging in 1791. Dessanes was a great military leader and worked as a live tenant under Toussant Louverture.
